Waxed canvas care
A waxed canvas jacket is one of the most unique and durable additions to your wardrobe. Before the modern paraffin based waxes used today there were heavier waxed coatings developed with linseed oil used in maritime industries. Originally cut from the scraps of heavy coated sails, weather-proof cotton fabrics were used to make capes and clothing and became an alternative to more expensive materials such as leather.
Don’t machine wash your waxed canvas. The canvas fabric is meant to withstand the elements because it has been impregnated with paraffin wax, washing with modern detergents can loosen the wax and will also do little to clean stains in the deeper cotton base.
To clean stains on waxed canvas you would want to spot-clean with mild detergents. If your jacket gets absolutely wrecked, you can machine wash it on gentle cycle, but I’ve never done it. Part of the waxed canvas is the development of character that it takes on. It’s okay to work in it, get it dirty, and let it be just that.
Waxed canvas will dry out just like any other material. You can simply put it on a hanger to air dry. Never machine dry.
